Pakistan Set to Mark World Tourism Day 2026 on September 27

Pakistan is preparing to join the international community in observing World Tourism Day 2026 on September 27. This year’s theme, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” spotlights the growing role of digital technology and AI in reshaping the global tourism industry.

A Global Observance With a Rotating Host

World Tourism Day is marked every year on September 27 under UN Tourism, the date chosen to commemorate the adoption of the organization’s Statutes in 1970. The observance has used a rotating host-country system since 1997, ensuring no single nation’s perspective dominates the global conversation. El Salvador has been named the official global host for 2026, following Malaysia’s hosting in 2025 — meaning this year’s flagship international events, alongside country-level observances like Pakistan’s, will center there.

The theme focuses on how AI and digital technologies can strengthen destination management, improve decision-making, personalize the travel experience, and make tourism more efficient and accessible. It also emphasizes using digital tools to build awareness around sustainable and responsible travel — a continuation of a broader shift UN Tourism has made in recent years, moving from pandemic-recovery messaging toward sustainability and now technology-driven transformation.

Traveller International’s Special Supplement

Traveller International, as a leading publication in the travel and tourism trade, is preparing a Special Supplement to mark the occasion, examining the opportunities and challenges emerging from tourism’s rapid digital transformation.

Tourism has always evolved through innovation, growing into one of the world’s fastest-growing economic sectors over recent decades. But the current pace of technological change is unprecedented — AI and digitalization are reshaping nearly every industry, and tourism is no exception. For Pakistan’s travel trade specifically, this theme lands at a relevant moment: platforms like PTDC’s recently announced partnership with GOPKZ show the digital-tourism shift already playing out locally, not just as an abstract global theme but as an active area of investment and policy focus within Pakistan’s own tourism sector.
