Sri Lanka and Pakistan are laying groundwork for deeper tourism collaboration, following a meeting between Sri Lankan High Commissioner Fred Senevirathne and Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan, Advisor to Pakistan’s Prime Minister on Tourism and CEO of Centaurus Group/Mövenpick Hotel. The discussion, held at Khan’s office in Islamabad, centered on expanding tourism, cultural, and educational ties between the two countries.
Planned Promotional Events
High Commissioner Senevirathne outlined a slate of upcoming initiatives to introduce Sri Lankan tourism, cuisine, and culture to Pakistani audiences, including:
- Sri Lanka Tea Tasting Day
- Sri Lanka Food Festival
- Sri Lanka Tourism Road Show in Islamabad
These events target the Pakistani public, travel trade, and industry stakeholders directly — signaling near-term B2B and consumer-facing opportunities for agencies working with either market.
Expanding Into Niche Tourism Segments
Both sides identified religious, medical, and adventure tourism as high-potential growth areas for increasing traveler exchange between the two countries. They also discussed establishing Travel Operators and Student Exchange Programmes to support professional, educational, and cultural interaction.
Chefs Exchange and Cultural Institution Partnerships
Senevirathne proposed a Chefs Training and Exchange Programme, giving culinary professionals from both countries a platform to share expertise and showcase their respective food traditions. Khan welcomed the proposal and suggested developing an Annual Tourism Promotional Events Calendar to keep future initiatives coordinated. He also floated MoUs between museums and cultural institutions in both countries to support joint exhibitions and heritage preservation efforts.

None of these initiatives are formalized yet, but the direction signals where Pakistan-Sri Lanka tourism cooperation is headed — a Road Show and structured events calendar in particular could open direct engagement opportunities for travel agencies and DMCs on both sides once dates are confirmed.
